In the 11th Century, Blessed Gerard of Amalfi, probably a lay brother of the Benedictine Order, was appointed Rector of a hospice in Jerusalem. In 1133 he and his monks were acknowledged by Pope Paschal II as a new religious order, the Knights of St John of Jerusalem.
